2010 is the 100th Anniversary of the Boy Scouts in America.  This is being celebrated with "A Year In Scouting", an program where Scouts, Leaders, Parents, and Alumni can earn different achievements, and become more involved in Scouts.  For more information, check with your local council.

Pack 286 is the original Cub Scout Pack in Odessa Missouri.  Founded in 1940, we are celebrating our 70th Year of Scouting in 2010!

Pack 286 meets on Mondays nights at McQuery Elementary during the School Year.  During the summer we get our Scouts involved in an assortment of activities from Cub Scout Camps to Field Trips.

If you are interested in Scouting, and you are in grades first through fifth, we invite you to come visit us anytime we are having a meeting, or visit one of the other Cub Packs that are in Odessa Missouri.

Winter Schedule - Scout Meetings

During the winter we have to take into consideration the safety of our Scouts, and the availability of our meeting location.  We will not have a meeting on any Monday of which there is No School during the School Year.  If School is Canceled or Closed Early because of weather, that evening's Cub Scout Meeting will also be closed.  If the weather turns bad after school, and we are concerned about the safety of our Cub Scouts and their family, we will cancel the meeting.

We will try to notify as many people as we can as soon as we know that a meeting is going to be canceled.  The information will be posted on the Pack 286 Facebook page, and here on this page as soon as possible.  If you have any questions, you can call Michelle on her Cell Phone any week day after 4pm.

HOAC Centennial Extravaganza

In September, the Heart of America Council - Boy Scouts of America will be holding their Centennial Celebration of Scouting Extravaganza.  This event is scheduled to take place at the HOAC Centennial Campground, across the street from Camp Nash in Bonner Spring Kansas.  This is going to be a once in a lifetime event for the Boy Scout, Cub Scouts, and Scout Leaders, so everyone needs to start making plans to attend this event ... now.

This is a three day event.  The Boy Scouts will be allowed to arrive on Friday and camp out Friday night into Saturday.  On Saturday morning, the Cub Scouts can arrive and they will be allowed to Camp overnight into Sunday.  Big Muddy District is talking about having the District camp together, and we are planning on having Pack 286 attend this event.

Special Thanks to Odessa VFW

UPDATE:  The VFW has graciously given us access to their banquet room for our Pinewood Derby on the last Saturday in February, and for our Blue and Gold Banquet on the last Saturday in March.  The Men's Auxiliary for the VFW has taken a very strong interest in supporting our endeavors to make 2010 and future years, the best years for Pack 286 Scouting.  We ask all our Scout Friends to help support the VFW in their endeavors, not only for being a great friend of Scouting, but for their service to our nation.

Watch our calendar for the VFW Breakfast Event held monthly on the Second Saturday.

What Is Cub Scouting

Since 1930, the Boy Scouts of America has helped younger boys through Cub Scouting. It is a year-round family program designed for boys who are in the first grade through fifth grade (or 7, 8, 9, and 10 years of age). Parents, leaders, and organizations work together to achieve the purposes of Cub Scouting. Currently, Cub Scouting is the largest of the BSA's three membership divisions; the others are Boy Scouting and Venturing.

Cub Scouting means "doing." Everything in Cub Scouting is designed to have the boys doing things. Activities are used to achieve the aims of Scouting—citizenship training, character development, and personal fitness.

Pack Leadership Training

Take this Seriously! This year, all Scout Leaders who have direct contact with any youth member of the Boy Scouts of America or Cub Scouts has to complete leader training.  Failure for Troops and Pack to comply with the BSA training initiative can have dire consequences for the Troop or Pack.  To put it simply, if a registered leader within Pack 286 does not meet this training requirement by the time we have to recharter for 2011, they cannot continue in a leadership position until they meet the new requirement.

There are a series of online course that all leaders are required to take.  The District Training committee conducts the training for Leader Essentials, generally on a Saturday morning and afternoon.  You can also get this training from one of the other districts in our area.  You need to make certain that any Course completion cards that you earn are turned into us so that we can relay them to our District Training Committee and get you credit for the courses.  Not doing so is considered as if you never took the course by the District and Region training Committees.

Knot of the Month

Taut-Line Hitch

(ABOK # 1734, p 298)

In Ashley’s Book of Knots (ABOK) this knot is known as an alternative version of the Rolling Hitch.  It is also referred to as the Mariner’s Hitch, as it is the only knot that you are recommended to use in the event that you suffer the misfortune of falling overboard while sailing, and had the good sense to have a line trailing your boat.  Unlike the Bowline Knot (often used for rescue work), it can be tied while under a load, making it an excellent knot for rescue work as well.  When tied correctly, you can slide the knot by moving the knot itself, but under a load, it will not slip.

This knot can be used to set up tent stake lines, or set up any taut line used in a campground.  It is easy to adjust and can be tied and untied easily while under a load, but is considered relatively secure.

For more information on knots, visit Knots Knut.
